Can Mounjaro Cause Diabetes?

Professor Franklin Joseph
Professor Joseph, an expert in diabetes and obesity management, leads clinical trials, chairs the Western Cheshire Diabetes Network, and priorities person-centered care for optimal outcomes.

If you are currently taking Mounjaro - or considering it - then you're probably wondering whether Mounjaro can cause diabetes. This is a common concern as the medication is used to treat type 2 diabetes and aid weight loss.

However, the answer is no - Mounjaro does not cause diabetes.

In fact, it's designed to do the opposite - it helps to regulate blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. If you're not diabetic, though, you may want to understand how it affects your blood sugar.

Let's explore this further – read on for information on Mounjaro and blood sugar, whether it can contribute to diabetes, and what other side effects you should be aware of.

Mounjaro and Blood Sugar

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist – it mimics the hormones that help regulate blood sugar and insulin.

It is prescribed for type 2 diabetes management and more recently, for weight loss in people with or without diabetes.

Mounjaro affects your blood sugar in three main ways:

  1. Lowers glucose levels by stimulating insulin release after meals
  2. Slows down gastric emptying, meaning your body absorbs sugar more gradually
  3. Reduces appetite, which can indirectly help with weight loss and blood sugar control

In clinical trials, particularly the SURPASS series, Mounjaro outperformed all comparators in HbA1c reduction and weight loss.

In the SURMOUNT-1 Trial, Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, reduced 10-year diabetes risk and reverted 95.3% of prediabetes cases to normal glucose levels

So, rather than causing high blood sugar or diabetes, Mounjaro can actually lower blood sugar and improve glycaemic control.

So, Can Mounjaro Cause Diabetes?

No, Mounjaro does not cause diabetes. It’s approved to treat type 2 diabetes and can actually prevent the progression of the disease in high-risk individuals by helping to manage weight and improve insulin sensitivity.

However, if you already have prediabetes and suddenly stop taking Mounjaro, then your blood sugar may rise again. This will not cause diabetes – instead, the positive, regulating effects of Mounjaro may begin to wear off.

If you don’t have diabetes and you use Mounjaro for weight loss, you may still be at risk for developing type 2 diabetes if you fail to address lifestyle or genetic risk factors.

So in other words, Mounjaro will not cause diabetes, but the way you manage your body during and after treatment is important.

Can Semaglutide Cause Diabetes?

Can Mounjaro Cause Hypoglycaemia?

Mounjaro does not cause diabetes, but it may increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) – especially when combined with other diabetes medications like insulin.

This is more common in people with type 2 diabetes than in non-diabetic users.

Clinical trial data show that about 1% to 2% of people taking Mounjaro in addition to insulin experienced dangerously low blood sugar.

Although the risk is low, always speak to your doctor if you are taking Mounjaro alongside other medications, as these medications may need to be adjusted.

What to Consider When Stopping Mounjaro

There are a few important things to keep in mind if you are considering stopping your Mounjaro treatment.

  1. Stopping suddenly can cause your blood sugar levels to rise again if you use it to manage type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance.
  2. You may experience weight regain when you stop, particularly if you don’t maintain healthy lifestyle changes
  3. Mounjaro isn’t addictive, but you may notice increased appetite and digestive changes after stopping.

Always talk to your doctor and prescriber before stopping Mounjaro. They may recommend tapering off or transitioning to another medication to avoid unwanted side effects or health risks.
