Mounjaro is a first-in-class dual receptor agonist medication that mimics two hormones – GLP-1 and GIP. It works by

Am I Eligible for Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is authorised for patients with a BMI (body mass index) higher than 30 or a BMI over 27 if you have a condition related to your weight. The BMI criteria may be lower depending on your ethnicity. So, you may be eligible for Mounjaro if:

  • Tried diet and exercise without success
  • Your BMI is higher than 25

How Effective is Mounjaro?

In short, Mounjaro is considered very effective. Mounjaro works by affecting your appetite, making you feel fuller for longer. Ultimately, this will help you lose weight over some time.

  • In the SURMOUNT-1 clinical trial patients lost up to 22.5% of their body weight
  • In the SURMOUNT-1 clinical trial patients lost 15.7% of their body weight (on 15mg)
  • In another study, patients on a higher dose (15mg) lost 21lbs; patients on a lower dose (5mg) lost 11.6lbs

Researchers estimate that people can lose up to 26.6% of their body weight when taking Mounjaro, which is an average weight loss of 60 pounds in under two years. The results appear to be more impressive than other weight loss medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy.

It can take anything from 8 to 12 weeks to start seeing results, but most patients will start to feel benefits even within the first couple of weeks. At Dr Frank’s Weight Loss Clinic, our patients tend to lose up to 20% of their body weight in the first year.

If you haven’t opened your Mounjaro pen:
• Store in the fridge between 2°C and 8°C
• Don’t freeze (if it freezes, throw it away) Keep in the original packaging

If you have opened your Mounjaro pen:
• Store in the fridge between 2°C and 8°C
• Dispose after 30 days

Make sure you place any used needles in a sharps container – and avoid disposing of your used needles in your usual bin. Place the pen in either a sharps container or in your household waste. Follow your local guidelines for disposing of the sharps container.

The safety and efficacy of Mounjaro in pregnant and breastfeeding women have not been established. Animal studies have shown potential adverse effects on the fetus, so it should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Women with reproductive potential need to use contraception during treatment.

If you have doubled on up doses and/or believe you have overdosed with the medication, please get in touch with us immediately and we can schedule a call with one of our specialist nurses to review your clinical signs and symptoms. Patients may experience gastrointestinal adverse reactions, including nausea.

There is no specific antidote for overdose of Mounjaro. A prolonged period of observation and treatment of these symptoms may be necessary, taking into account the half-life of Mounjaro (approximately 5 days).

Mounjaro is administered through a subcutaneous (under the skin) injection, typically in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. The initial dose is usually low, to minimise side effects, and is gradually increased based on the individual’s response and tolerance.
