If you are pregnant, you should not take Mounjaro or any other weight loss injections. But why? Is it unsafe to take Mounjaro whilst pregnant? What about if you’re trying to conceive? Let’s find out.
Is Mounjaro Safe to Take Whilst Pregnant?
No – it is not currently considered safe to take Mounjaro whilst pregnant. This is because there is a lack of studies and data regarding this at the moment. Mounjaro would only be prescribed to a pregnant person if the benefits far outweigh the risks.
In animal studies, it was found that tirzepatide can put the foetus at risk. These studies, however, do not discuss the specific types of harm caused.
Can I Take Mounjaro If I’m Trying to Actively Conceive?
If you are planning to conceive and are currently taking Mounjaro, speak to your doctor. At Dr Frank's Weight Loss Clinic, we would not recommend taking Mounjaro whilst actively trying to conceive. This is because there is limited information on the safety of Mounjaro during conception.
There have not been any well-controlled or adequate human studies on using Mounjaro during conception, as studies typically exclude pregnant women.
If you are currently taking Mounjaro with Dr Frank’s Weight Loss Clinic, we will usually recommend that you stop taking it at least a month before you start trying to actively conceive. If you are unsure what to do for the best, our experts at Dr Frank’s are on hand to provide the advice and support you need.
Can I Take Mounjaro If I Have Difficulty Trying to Conceive?
Women who live with obesity can have problems with fertility. An example of this is when women are affected by Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and have irregular and anovulatory (not producing an egg) menstrual cycles.
Treatment with Mounjaro to effectively lose weight can help restore normal periods and fertility. It is important, however, to ensure that you are using effective contraception while on treatment as the restoration of fertility can be unpredictable – and accidental pregnancies with “Mounjaro babies” are on the rise. If in doubt, always discuss this with a member of the clinical team – and if you do find yourself in this situation, seek help immediately.
Can I Take Mounjaro If I’m on The Birth Control Pill?
Mounjaro may react with your birth control pill, reducing the effectiveness during the first four weeks of treatment – and for four weeks following every dose escalation. This is because Mounjaro slows down gastric emptying, affecting the effectiveness of the pill.
If you continue to take the pill during your Mounjaro journey, use a backup method - such as a condom - for at least four weeks after each dosage increase. Likewise, be sure to speak with your doctor to explore other birth control methods, such as implants or coils, while using Mounjaro.
Can I Take Mounjaro if I’m Breastfeeding?
We don't recommend taking Mounjaro if you are breastfeeding. This is because there is currently limited research on how safe tirzepatide is during breastfeeding. We still don't know for certain whether the medication passes into breast milk, or whether it will affect the child.
Tirzepatide is a large molecule - so it won't pass through breast milk in large amounts. However, it's best to avoid breastfeeding on Mounjaro due to the uncertainty.
Is Mounjaro Right for Me?
If you're considering taking Mounjaro for weight loss purposes, you'll need to meet certain eligibility criteria. It could be a good choice for you if you:
- Are looking to lose a significant amount of weight
- Have type 2 diabetes
- Have a BMI of 30 or higher
- Have a BMI of 27+ and a weight-related health condition
- Can afford to go private (as Mounjaro can be tough to get on the NHS for weight loss purposes)
