Can People Living with Type 1 Diabetes Take Mounjaro for Weight Loss?

Professor Franklin Joseph
Professor Joseph, an expert in diabetes and obesity management, leads clinical trials, chairs the Western Cheshire Diabetes Network, and priorities person-centered care for optimal outcomes.

Mounjaro is a highly effective weight loss treatment among people living with type 2 diabetes and obesity, but is it an option for those with type 1 diabetes?

Let’s find out. Read on to learn about type 1 diabetes, Mounjaro, and current UK guidelines regarding Mounjaro and Type 1 diabetes.

What Is Type 1 Diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition that affects around 270,000 people in the UK

It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, meaning the body can no longer produce insulin (a hormone essential for regulating blood sugar) on its own.

Type 2 diabetes often develops later in life and is associated with insulin resistance. Type 1 diabetes, however, often starts in childhood or early adulthood and always requires insulin therapy.

Common Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes

Some of the most common signs and symptoms of type 1 diabetes include:

  • Excessive thirst and frequent urination
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Extreme hunger
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing cuts or infections

If you leave type 1 diabetes (T1D) untreated, it can lead to life-threatening complications such as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

What Is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is a first-in-class dual receptor agonist, belonging to a class of drugs known as GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonists. This drug class works by:

  • Stimulating insulin release when blood sugar is high in patients who have the ability to produce insulin still
  • Slowing down digestion to promote fullness
  • Supporting weight loss by reducing appetite

There are three injection sites for Mounjaro – the upper arm, abdomen, and thigh. You inject the medication once a week, gradually increasing your dose until you hit the Mounjaro maintenance dose

In the UK, Mounjaro is licensed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity under strict medical guidance. This means you can only get Mounjaro with a prescription in the UK, whether it be through your GP or through a private prescriber, such as ourselves at Dr Frank’s Weight Loss Clinic.

Mounjaro Side Effects

Mounjaro may cause side effects as your body adjusts to the dose. Mounjaro side effects are usually mild and should ease off after a few days. Here are some common side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue

Some people may also experience headaches or ‘sulphur burps’ after taking Mounjaro. If you are experiencing particularly unpleasant side effects, speak to a healthcare professional – such as ourselves here at Dr Frank’s Weight Loss Clinic.

Can You Take Mounjaro With Type 1 Diabetes?

Yes, you can take Mounjaro if you are living with type 1 diabetes, as well as being overweight or obese. However, it is important that you recognise that the Mounjaro is not being used to treat type 1 diabetes, but to treat the overweight and obesity. Insulin still remains essential to treat type 1 diabetes.

Risk of Hypoglycaemia

People with type 1 diabetes depend on insulin therapy, so adding a medication like Mounjaro that impacts blood sugar regulation could increase the risk of low blood sugar levels (hypoglycaemia). Our clinical team are experts and will help to guide patients on their journey safely by making appropriate adjustments to their insulin therapy.

Research on Mounjaro with Type 1 Diabetes

A 2025 study of 84 people with type 1 diabetes who were overweight or obese and received off-label tirzepatide treatment reported an average weight loss of 23% after 21 months.

Participants of this study also showed better glucose control (including reduced A1C and more time in range), along with notable improvements in cardiovascular and kidney disease risk markers.

No cases of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or hypoglycemia were reported in this group. The complexity of treating people with Type 1 diabetes means that people must be supervised by trained specialist clinicians with the right expertise.

Our team consists of Consultant Endocrinologists and Diabetes Specialist Nurses who can provide the expertise to do this safely, whether you are injecting insulin or using a pump or a hybrid closed loop system.

Who is Mounjaro For?

Mounjaro is approved in the UK for adults with type 2 diabetes who need better blood sugar control and also for weight management in people living with obesity.

It should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women, as there is not enough evidence to confirm its safety. It should also not be used if you have a history of thyroid cancers such as medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).

Weight Management Tips for Type 1 Diabetes

Whilst Mounjaro is an option if you have type 1 diabetes, you can also benefit from other interventions to achieve healthy weight management through these proven methods:

  • Focus on balanced nutrition – Opt for whole foods, lean protein, healthy fats, and fibre-rich carbs
  • Exercise regularly – Cardio and strength training can help you control your weight and  insulin sensitivity
  • Monitor your blood sugar – Monitoring helps prevent hypoglycaemia during exercise and dietary changes
  • Consider professional support – Dietitians and weight management clinics can provide structured, personalised advice.

Next Steps

If you’re living with type 1 diabetes and struggling with weight management, Mounjaro is currently a safe option under the supervision of our clinical team of specialists. We offer expert guidance and Mounjaro prescriptions, depending, of course, on eligibility.
